FALL GUIDE TO A HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE SEASON
The time of year that Keats called the 'Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness', autumn is a season famous for its harvest times, turning leaves, cooling temperatures and darkening nights. As things begin to slow down, people will start spending more time at home which for a many of us can turn into a “seasonal depression”. The lack of sunlight, heavy rain and short days are hard to avoid; so let’s make the most of them.
At SAGE we believe a healthy life is a happy life. Here is my guide to a successful healthy and sustainable Fall 2022.
EAT SEASONALLY
Fall comes with an exciting harvesting season. Make the most out of seasonal produce, like pumpkins and squashes, potatoes, parsnips, leeks, kale, pears, figs, plums and apples. Plan your meals ahead to reduce food waste. Save money and shop locally. Depending on where you live you’ll have access to different fruits and vegetables. Don’t forget to bring your reusable bag with you!
TAKE CARE OF YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Your immune system is the natural defense system that fights invading diseases. Such invaders can be viruses, parasites, and fungi. But, if the system gets compromised, you might end up becoming sick. You should strive to boost your immune system by taking vitamins, eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly and avoiding smoking/drugs.
ENJOY A FUN FALL ACTIVITY
Explore your area and perhaps go apple picking or pumpkin picking? If you enjoy drinking wine, now is also a perfect time to visit vineyards.
FALL HOME DECOR
It’s very tempting to buy new seasonal decor each season. For years I’ve worked as a print designer, creating seasonal prints and graphics for sleepwear and soft home goods. Before buying a new harvest printed pillow, ask yourself do I really need this for my home? Maybe instead of buying a harvest pillow, buy a solid orange or brown pillow cover that you can keep all year around and easily switch for a red when Christmas comes around. Instead of buying plastic pumpkins, invest into real pumpkins that you can later cook with. Pick up pinecones outside, and decorate your home with them. It’s free and much better for the planet. You can always compost them or repurpose for Christmas.
ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHT BULBS
Autumn is characterised by shorter days, which means that you’ll probably need to keep your lights on for longer hours. Switch to LED bulbs that are easy on the wallet and the planet.
SWITCH TO FALL WARDROBE
Every fall and early spring I switch out a majority of my closet for a new “seasonal” refresh. I do not have space to keep all of my clothes in the closet, so doing the seasonal switch is definitely refreshing! Half the time I forget about the things I own, which I think many of us do too. If you’re looking to buy new fall pieces, consider buying more eco-conscious pieces from brands that care about sustainability. Go thrifting, or visit only secondhand stores where you can be pre-owned stuff. Repair your clothes as much as possible before throwing out. Reuse-Recycle-Upcycle before throwing it in the trash.
READ AND LEARN
As days get shorter and nights get longer, put some time aside every night to read something new. Educate yourself on topics you’re interested in, or simply want to know more about. You can also watch documentaries, short movies or connect with people that might be interested in starting a bookclub.
PICK UP A NEW SKILL
It's very easy to start feeling unproductive when you’re spending a lot more time at home. Instead pick up a new skill such as baking, cooking, knitting or perhaps learn a new language ? Now is the perfect time to explore and learn.
SPEND TIME OUTDOORS
Enjoy the crisp fall air and foliage while getting lost in a new place. Fall hikes are the most beautiful ones.
