HOMEMADE FRUIT + VEGGIE WASH
Many of us don’t realize the importance of eating washed fruits and vegetables. The two most common risks of eating unwashed produce are bacterial contamination and pesticides. In recent years, many outbreaks of foodborne illness have come from contaminated strawberries, spinach, apples and many more.
Buying organic produce is definitely the way to go; however not everything you buy needs to be organic. If the produce comes from a small local farm, most likely it’s better for you than something that’s imported from a foreign third world country.
This quick and easy fruit and veggie wash is a great DIY hack to save you time and money! Here are my two recipes I’ve been following for years. I recommend cleaning your produce as soon as you buy it. I like to “meal prep” my fruits and veggies so they’re ready to use for the next few days. However, if you don’t plan on eating them for a couple of days just leave them as they are until ready. The veggie wash draws out any dirt, bugs, and pesticides that are sprayed onto them.
RECIPE 1 - SOAK
1 big bowl of water
1/4 cup of vinegar
2 tablespoons of salt
Combine cold water with vinegar and salt. Let the vinegar and salt dissolve, and slowly add in fruits and veggies. Let them sit for about 20-30 minutes. Rub off any dirt, rinse with tap water, dry and store away.
Tip: In my video I have used smaller bowls with half the vinegar and salt ratio. I like separating my fruits and veggies depending on what I’ll be doing with them later.
RECIPE 2 - SPRAY
1 reusable clean spray bottle
1 tablespoon of lemon juice fresh
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 cup of water
Combine all ingredients to create spray substance. Spray on dry veggies/fruits and let soak for 5 minutes. Rinse with cold tap water, dry and store away.
Tip: I like using the spray on smaller fruits or veggies, or if I need something right away and don’t feel like cleaning up from a big soak.
